Lightweight Crew Breezes to 4-0 Day versus Georgetown
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 4 Navy lightweight rowing program had another strong performance as the Mids swept a four-race slate on the road at No. 9 Georgetown on Saturday. Racing on the Potomac River, the Mids earned four dominant wins of nine seconds or more in every contest against the Hoyas.
"The depth and strength of our team was on display this morning as all boats weathered a strong challenge from Georgetown and put together some complete racing,” remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. “The team continues to be committed to improving from week-to-week during the regular season and also understanding that in the final two weeks of the regular season we'll need to bring our best to the table. That said, we always look forward to the racing this weekend to honor a great oarsman and Marine, John J. Forster. Semper Fi."
The Mids’ lower boats took to the Potomac first on Saturday in the fourth/fifth varsity race. Navy’s 4V finished first with a time of 6:11.86, while the 5V boat clocked in at 6:23.44. Both Navy teams completed the course well ahead of Georgetown, who posted a 6:39.28.
In the third varsity competition, Navy led wire-to-wire and came in 12.51 seconds ahead at 6:12.79 to 6:25.30.
Another substantial margin of victory was claimed in the second varsity race as the Mids turned in a 6:07.03 time to beat the Hoyas’ 6:18.03 by 11 seconds.
The closest race of the day came with the Forster Cup on the line and Navy was challenged by Georgetown initially before pulling away for a 9.61-second victory at 6:01.15 to 6:10.76.
This was the fourth straight year that Navy swept Georgetown in all races on its way to a Forster Cup victory.
