Mids Finish Sixth at IRA National Championship
June 6, 2009
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Navy men's lightweight crew team produced a sixth-place time in the varsity eight grand final on Saturday at the IRA Championship on Lake Natoma. Racing against the nation's top lightweight programs, the Mids completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:14.80 - almost 10 full seconds before seventh-place Columbia. Princeton won the race with a time of 6:03.23 - 4.77 seconds ahead of second-place Yale and 6.37 seconds faster than third-place Harvard. Georgetown finished fourth with a 6:12.93 clocking, soon followed by Cornell's fifth-place time of 6:13.42. "We did not execute the way we had been coming into today," stated Navy head coach Nick Baker. "We are disappointed with the outcome. This should not be a reflection of how hard the guys had worked all season to get to this point. We just feel that we were faster than we performed today." The Midshipmen also placed fourth in the grand final of the open four event with a time of 6:47.98. Navy, who competed with members of both its heavyweight and lightweight teams, trimmed 2.23 seconds off its time from Friday to finish 6.01 seconds ahead of fifth-place Syracuse and 8.16 seconds before sixth-place Princeton. Washington won the race with a time of 6:35.48, followed by Wisconsin's 6:36.33 clocking and California's 6:45.16 showing. VARSITY EIGHT (Finished sixth overall) OPEN FOUR (Finished fourth overall)
