Navy Defeats Top-Ranked Princeton in Crew

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy lightweight crew team opened the spring season by seeing its first varsity boat defeat top-ranked Princeton, Saturday morning on the Severn River in Annapolis.
"It was a very good all-around day of racing for us," said Navy lightweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "We are happy to have defeated a very good first varsity crew from Princeton, but I think the most exciting part of the day for everyone was seeing strong results from the depth of our team."
In the first varsity race, Navy posted a time of 6:04.9 to finish six seconds in front of Princeton (6:11.0). In this week's first varsity poll conducted by U.S. Rowing, Princeton and Harvard were tied for first place, Yale was third and Navy was ranked fourth.
Princeton did record a four-second victory in the second varsity race, but Navy won the third varsity race by 9.5 seconds and the first novice contest by 7.45 seconds.
The Navy and Princeton heavyweight novice teams also took to the Severn River Saturday morning, with the Tigers winning both contests. The first novice race saw the Tigers record a seven-second win, while Princeton defeated Navy by four seconds in the second novice race.
"While I think our novice boats displayed some of their inexperience today, they kept fighting to the end," said heavyweight novice coach Chris Allsopp. "After falling behind early, they forced Princeton to change their rates in response to how we were coming on. If we can carry that fight through the remainder of our races we will have the chance to do some good things this season."
Navy's lightweight team will race next Saturday against Yale, while the heavyweights will be in action against Columbia. Both teams will be competing in Mercer County, N.J.
