For the first time in nearly two decades, the Navy lightweight crew team won the first varsity race from Princeton, Saturday on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.

The Mids took control of the race from the start, jumping out to an early lead within the first 30 seconds of the race and extending it's lead to a boat length at the first 500-meter mark. Navy went on to post a seven-second victory, 5:42.4-5:49.1.

Navy also faired well against Princeton in the remaining races on the day, winning three of the other four contests. Navy's third varsity finished its race in 6:03.5 to outdistance Princeton by 3.3 seconds, the first novice boat completed the 2000-meter course in a time of 5:56.9, nearly eight seconds faster than the Tigers, and Navy's second novice boat finished close to seven seconds in front of Princeton, 6:11.8-6:18.5.

The only blemish on an otherwise perfect Navy day was in the second varsity race, won by Princeton with a time of 5:50.8, three seconds faster than the Mids.

"It was a great day for Navy," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "This is a good sign for us, that we will do well this season, but it is still very early."

While it is still very early in the season, through the first two weeks of the year Navy's first varsity has posted a 10-0 record, the second varsity holds an 7-3 record, the third varsity has a 6-1 mark, the first novice team has posted a 10-1 record and the second novice team enters its next race with a 4-0 record.

Navy will play host to Georgetown Saturday morning at the Severn River.
