PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Navy lightweight rowing team will be seeking redemption this Saturday, as the Midshipmen will look to reclaim the Callow Cup from the No. 7 Penn Quakers on Saturday. After winning 12 straight competitions dating back to 2000, the Mids were defeated by the Quakers in 2013 to secure the rights to the 58-year old trophy. No. 10 Delaware will also be racing alongside the two schools on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The four-event schedule begins at 11:50 a.m. with the third varsity race and concludes with the Callow Cup race at 1:00 p.m. The three programs will also compete in a first freshmen (12:20 p.m.) and second varsity competition (12:40 p.m.).
"After a solid home race against Harvard last Saturday, the team wants to build on that effort and close out the regular season on a positive note,” said Navy head coach Shawn Bagnall. “Being able to replicate that effort on the road is key, especially on the Schuylkill where we anticipate formidable challenges in racing Penn and Delaware.
In 2013, Navy hosted the annual event on the Severn River and saw the Quakers earn the Callow Cup for the first time since 2000 with a 6:03.3 – 6:09.5 victory in the V8 race. For the day, the Midshipmen were victorious in both the 2V8 and V4 races with dominant showings as both of their ‘A’ and ‘B’ crews finished ahead of Penn and Delaware.
The Callow Cup: The cup is named in honor of Russell “Rusty” Callow, who coached at both Penn and the U.S. Naval Academy. Since competition for the cup began in 1955, the Mids hold a four-win lead at 31-27 over the Quakers. Prior to 2013’s result, Navy had won 12 straight V8 races over Penn.
