CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Navy's lightweight crew team defeated Harvard in three-of-five races, Saturday morning on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.

The Mids won the first three races contested on the day, all by at least 10 seconds. Navy won the second novice race by 25 seconds, the first novice race by 11 seconds and the third varsity race by nearly 11 seconds.

"We had quick starts in all three of our victories today," said Navy head coach Dale Hurley. "We have a lot of depth on this team and the victories today bode well for our future."

Navy did not have similar success in the last two races of the day, the first and second varsity race. As in the first three races, Navy jumped out to an early lead in the second varsity race, but the Crimson took the lead for good about 750 meters into the race and eventually won by six seconds. Harvard took the early lead in the last race of the day, the first varsity, and led by a boat length halfway through the race. The Crimson held off the numerous Navy pushes on their way to a nine-second win.

"We didn't race as well as we are capable of in the last two races," said Hurley. "I know the ability is there to close the gap and I am confident we will go faster in the very near future."

The Mids will return to the Charles River Sunday morning when Navy faces MIT.
