Navy Heavyweight & Lightweight Crew Teams in Action at EARC Sprints on Sunday
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 16 Navy heavyweight and No. 6 lightweight crew programs will each be taking part in the 61st Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Sprints on Sunday in Worcester, Mass. at Lake Quinsigamond. The event annually hosts some of the top rowing squads from across the country in a day-long competition. The heat racing begins at 8 a.m. before championship final action kicks off at 1 p.m.
In heavyweight action, Navy’s varsity eight is seeded 13th overall. Each of the successive boats climb the standings as the second varsity eight is seeded 12th and the third crew is ranked eighth. The Mids’ 4V8 is seeded fifth, while their 5V8 is the top-seed.
On the lightweight side of the spectrum, Navy’s first varsity eight is seeded sixth. After the Mids’ 2V8 is seeded at number four, the 3V8 comes in at number three. Navy’s final three boats are all seeded in the top-two as the fourth crew is second and the fifth and sixths are seeded first, respectively.
In the 2016 competition at Lake Quinsigamond, the heavyweights competed in one grand final, three petite finals and one third final. A victory by its fifth varsity eight highlighted the program's day. Navy was tied for 13th in the team point standings with George Washington.
At the front end of its varsity racing program, Navy's first crew was faced with having to race out of an extremely fast heat number one. The Mids posted a time of 5:53.454 that ranked fifth, a little over two seconds out of the last petite final transfer spot in heat one. Overall, their time was ninth-best in the morning. In the third final, Navy cruised with a time of 5:44.845 to finish the Eastern Sprints with an overall rank of 13th.
The lightweight team had five boats entered in the 2016 event. All five of its boats qualified for and raced in grand finals action. A runners-up result by the Mids' fourth varsity highlighted the program's efforts. As a team, Navy finished fifth overall in the Jope Cup standings.
In the grand final, the Mids’ first varsity team finished sixth overall with a time of 5:53.517.
The heavyweight field at the 2017 EARC Sprints is 18 teams deep and consists of Boston U., Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, George Washington, Georgetown, Harvard, Holy Cross, MIT, Navy, Northeastern, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers, Syracuse, Wisconsin and Yale.
In the lightweight competition, 10 programs will be racing in Worcester, as the field is as follows, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Yale.
