CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Five members of the Navy lightweight rowing team were recently announced by the Eastern College Athletic Conference as honorees on the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s All-Academic Team. 2014 graduate Timothy Dixon, rising seniors Chris Kent and Jordan Spear, and rising juniors Thomas Coffin and Stephen Walsh all garnered the national accolade.
To qualify for the All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 or better, be at least a sophomore at their respective institution and be a varsity letterwinner.
Dixon (aerospace engineering, 3.78 GPA), Kent (mathematics honors, 3.93 GPA), Spear (ocean engineering, 3.81 GPA), Coffin (aerospace engineering, 3.58) and Walsh (mechanical engineering, 4.00 GPA) were all first-time honorees of this award.
In all, 258 student-athletes from 28 institutions were named to the 2014 IRA All-Academic Team.
The lightweight rowing program experienced a revitalization under first-year head coach Shawn Bagnall this spring as the Mids qualified two boats in the IRA National Championship for the first time since 2011. Facing off versus a national field, Navy finished seventh in both the varsity eight and varsity four competitions.
