Links associated with this release: Naval Academy Director of Athletics Jack Lengyel announced today the hiring of Rob Friedrich as the new lightweight crew coach at Navy. "We are very excited about the appointment of Rob Friedrich as head coach of our lightweight crew program," said Lengyel. "He brings to us a wealth of personal rowing success, as well as coaching success during his tenure at Rutgers. He will be an outstanding addition to our staff." Friedrich has spent the last three years as the head lightweight crew coach at Rutgers, his alma mater. He was named 1999 Eastern Association of Rowing Coaches Lightweight Crew Coach of the Year when his first varsity boat placed second in the IRA National Championship and his second varsity boat placed second in the Eastern Sprint Championship. This past summer he served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National Team. A 1997 graduate of Rutgers, Friedrich captained the program's lightweight crew team as a senior and was twice named the team's most valuable athlete. After graduation, Friedrich continued his rowing career by being named to the U.S. National Lightweight Crew Team in both '97 and '98. "Becoming part of the Navy crew team is a great opportunity for me," said Friedrich. "I feel I am arriving at a great time as the program has been on the upswing over the past few years. I feel this program can continue to strive for a national title." "I believe Rob Friedrich is one of the best and brightest young coaches in our sport," said Navy Director of Rowing Rick Clothier. "At a very young age he has already delivered some remarkable coaching performances. I think the combination of our lightweight athletes and Rob will result in some very fast, very competitive crews."
