Crew Teams to Race Saturday in D.C.
Links associated with this release: Navy's lightweight and women's crew teams will begin their fall schedule Saturday with the Head of the Potomac Regatta in Washington, D.C. The lightweight team will enter one freshen and four varsity boats, while the women will enter one boat in the championship flight and two in the club race. The starting line for the race on the Potomac River is roughly three miles north of the Watergate Hotel, with the finish line being the hotel itself. In a head race, boats leave the starting line individually and race single file down the course. Final places in the race will be determined by the computer timing of each boat. Lightweight coach Rob Friedrich and women's coach Mike Hughes both expect Georgetown to provide strong competition on Saturday. Each coach is using this first race of the season to gauge the progress of their respective team through the first few weeks of practice. "We are treating this as a great training race for the bigger races later on our schedule," said Friedrich. "We will use this weekend to help guide our speed throughout the fall. No one else in our league competes for another three weeks, so this will be a nice head start for us on the rest of our main competition."
