Navy Rowing Win Seven Events at Navy Day Regatta

Oct. 14, 2017

PHILADELPHIA – In a combined event for Navy’s heavyweight, lightweight and women’s rowing teams on Saturday, the Midshipmen came away with seven event victories at the 2017 Navy Day Regatta. Racing on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in the annual day-long competition that began in 1986, the Mids had 31 entries across 10 separate events. The heavyweight and lightweight programs each won three events, while the women’s team earned a win in the freshmen eight race.

The heavyweight team opened the lineup of races with two varsity boats in the Collegiate Four event. The Mids’ A and B boats finished first and second respectively amongst a field of 21 with times of 13:29.58 and 14:00.12. The pair defeated their next closest competitor, St. Joseph’s, by over nine seconds.

The rowers from that morning four race took to the Schuylkill later in the day in the Open Eight event. The top Navy crew finished first of 26 with a 1.80-second margin of victory at 12:09.86. Drexel came in second at 12:11.66. Navy had three more of its crews finish in the top-10 as Navy C was fourth (12:46.19), Navy B was sixth (12:51.24) and Navy D was 10th (13:05.37).

"It was a strong day for all our boats in Philadelphia,” remarked heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. “Our varsity boat broke into two fours to win the morning race and then doubled up to win the Open Eight race in the afternoon. It's a young boat but they are learning fast and continue to improve every week."

That action in the Open Eight was the second of the day for the heavyweight Mids’ second, third and fourth varsity boats as they had competed earlier in the morning’s Collegiate JV Eight race. Navy showed strong there as well with three top-four results. Navy B won the event by 0.28 seconds over Navy A, 12:32.57 to 12:32.85. Drexel A slotted into third place before Navy C came in fourth at 12:45.94.

"Our 2V, 3V, and 4V boats had a solid race in JV Eight race and they also doubled up into the Open race without much rest,” said Friedrich. “They were a little sluggish in their second race but still managed to all finish in the top ten."

The lightweight varsity crews shared similar split action. First up for the lightweights was racing in the Collegiate Lightweight Four event. With four entries in a field of nine, Navy took each of the top-four spots with a dominant performance across the board. While Navy A finished first at 13:53.89, the next three Midshipmen crews came within six seconds as Navy D was second (13:56.01), Navy C was third (13:56.53) and Navy B was fourth (13:59.08). Delaware’s top boat finished 17.01 seconds behind Navy B at 14:16.09.

In the afternoon’s Open Lightweight Eight race, Navy’s three boats completed the race in positions three, four and sixth in a field of 13. The Mids’ B boat tallied a third-place result at 12:20.03, while the A boat was right behind in fourth at 12:24.67. Navy C clocked in 2.8 seconds behind Penn B to rank sixth overall at 12:44.41.

The women’s program entered its roster in five separate boats across three races. The Mids’ first varsity boat saw action in the Open Eight event. Taking on 26 boats, Navy placed runner-up to the eventual race winner, Penn A, with a time of 14:02.01.

The Mids went two boats deep in the Collegiate JV Eight race with its second and third varsity crews racing on the Schuylkill. Navy A finished third behind Penn A and Drexel A with a 14:31.52 result. The Mids’ B boat ranked 10th of 22 at 15:10.08.

“The team finally got their feet racing some teams outside of Hubbard Hall,” said women’s head coach Joe Schlosberg. “While we didn’t hit all of our goals for the day, we raced hard. We’re rowing better and better each day.”

The freshmen class from all three programs saw racing action on Saturday. In the case of the heavyweight and lightweight teams, their respective plebes raced in the Collegiate Freshmen Eight and Collegiate Freshmen Four competitions.

In the morning’s eight race, Navy’s lightweight A crew won with a 12:42.99 result. The heavyweight plebes finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth with comparable times of 13:04.63 and 13:06.33. The lightweight B boat ranked seventh at 13:28.61. 14 total crews competed in the event.

Three hours later, the eights divided into four-person crews and levelled the opposition with results that covered first through sixth position. Navy’s lightweight A boat won with a substantial 18.12-second victory at 13:46.63. The heavyweight A crew notched a second-place finish at 14:04.75. The B and C heavyweight boats took third and fourth place respectively with times of 14:21.57 and 14:33.78. Lightweight B and C finished consecutively in fifth (14:38.92) and sixth place (15:05.68). Each of the remaining four non-Navy boats in the event finished over 30 seconds off the pace.

"We are very excited about our plebe group,” exclaimed Friedrich. “They rowed even boats today and posted the fastest combined time in the freshmen eight race. They also showed their depth in the freshmen fours event."

The freshmen from the women’s team hit the water and laid down two strong performances in the Collegiate Freshmen/Novice Eight race. Navy A took the event title with a time of 14:52.69, over five seconds ahead of Drexel’s entry. Navy B came in fourth place at 15:29.86.

“Our plebes got us off to a great start placing first and fourth in the Novice Eight. All of our varsity boats showed better speed and put together some great racing but Penn was just a better team today,” surmised Schlosberg. “We’ve got some work to do, but this team is hungry and will go after it moving forward.”

Next up for the top varsity crews from the heavyweight and lightweight programs is action at the Head of the Charles, next Sunday, Oct. 22 in Boston, Mass. The women will return to competition on Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Princeton Chase.
