BOSTON – The Navy heavyweight, lightweight and women’s rowing teams will be in action at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. this weekend. Beginning on Saturday, Oct. 19 with the heavyweight program competing in the Men’s Club Eights race, Navy’s three teams will have a total of five entries in the regatta.

“This event has the highest caliber competition in the world,” said Navy heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. “It'll be exciting to see our young athletes put everything on the line and compete against the best in our sport. For our guys, who will be serving in the military after graduation, this is a special event and a great learning experience.”

Shawn Bagnall, the head coach of the lightweight crew, shares a similar excitement to that of Friedrich. Bagnall’s lightweight Mids will have one boat entered in the Regatta.

"The Charles is always a great fall racing opportunity for our Midshipmen, especially our coxswains,” said Bagnall. “We know that the lightweight event will be loaded with talented crews, and our goal is simply to put together a complete race on Sunday in Boston.”

The women’s team will have entries in both Championship Four and Championship Eight events on Sunday to round off Navy’s lineup.

“The Head of the Charles Regatta is another fantastic weekend representing and supporting all three programs that put in the hard work each day at Hubbard Hall,” said Bagnall describing the importance of this event for the entire Navy Rowing program.

Since its origin in 1965, the Head Of The Charles Regatta has drawn the best crews from around the world to compete along the Charles River. The two-day event attracts over 9,000 athletes and 300,000 spectators.

For the best view of the regatta, spectators are suggested to the watch between the Anderson and Weeks bridges, near the halfway point of the course.
