Navy Crew Readies for 53rd Annual Head of the Charles
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rowing program will be represented this weekend at the 2017 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. The heavyweight and lightweight teams will both be entering a pair of boats into the 53rd installment of the international event. Known throughout the world as one of the premier rowing competitions, the Head of the Charles will feature teams racing in a head-style contest over a three-mile stretch of the Charles River. The junior varsity crews from the heavyweight and lightweight squads will kick off the action on Saturday afternoon before the varsity boats test themselves on Sunday.

The Midshipmen in the 2V8 boats will be participating in the Men’s Club Eight race on Saturday beginning at 2:23 PM. The heavyweights and lightweights from Hubbard Hall will race against each other as two of the 36 entries in the event. On Sunday, the varsity eight crews from the heavyweight and lightweight programs will race in their respective Men's Championship Eights and Men's Lightweight Eights. The heavyweights will compete versus a field of 26 at 1:48 p.m. while the lightweights will race concurrently at 1:48 p.m. against 16 opponents.
At the 2016 event, top-10 results by the heavyweight’s second varsity eight boat in the Men’s Club Eight race on Saturday and the first lightweight varsity eight team in the Lightweight Championship Eight race on Sunday led Navy’s combined effort. Navy’s 2V8 crew finished ninth overall and seventh amongst their collegiate counterparts in the Club Eight race, while the lightweight V8 crew finished eighth in the Men’s Lightweight Eight contest (seventh versus collegiate competition).
Since its origin in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has drawn the best crews from around the world to compete along the Charles River. The two-day event attracts over 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators. This year's competition has over 2,200 tentative entries from 790 clubs racing in 56 separate events.
For the best view of the regatta, spectators are suggested to the watch between the Anderson and Weeks bridges, near the halfway point of the course.
