Crew Plebes to Race at Rutgers Fall Classic

Nov. 3, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The future of Navy rowing will be spotlighted this Saturday as plebe crews from the heavyweight, lightweight and women's teams will be racing at the Rutgers Fall Classic. The competition on the Raritan River features a unique scoring format that ranks teams based on the combined times of their top-two boats. The action begins with the heavyweight and lightweight crews hitting the water for the Freshmen Eight race at 12:00 p.m.

Navy's three crews with race in three separate events on Saturday. Following the Men's Freshmen Eight event, the Women's Novice Eight race will go off at 12:15 p.m. 45 minutes later, the eight-man squads will break up into fours for the Men's Varsity Four competition at 1:00 p.m.

The field for the 2.5-mile race will consist of teams from Navy, Bucknell, Rutgers and Delaware. In total, 15 separate crews will race in the Freshman Eights competition, while 20 boats are set to compete in the Varsity Fours event. Navy and Rutgers will go head-to-head in the Women's Novice Eights.

The unique team-based scoring format will test the depth of each team racing on Saturday. Looking to secure the lowest overall time, each program sets their top two crews as being ‘even’ and racing to a combined total time. The ‘even’ style competition will play out in both eights and fours racing.

Last year in New Brunswick, Navy dominated the action in the Freshmen Eights races as the crews from the heavyweight and lightweight programs swept the top four positions in the event. The heavyweight ‘A’ and ‘B’ crews went one, two with respective times of 12:22 and 12:41 to post an aggregate team time of 25:03. The lightweight ‘A’ and ‘B’ boats were right behind in third and fourth place at 12:48 and 12:50 for a 25:38 cumulative team time.

For fans wishing to watch the action, they are asked to park on the Cook/Douglass Campus near the Class of 1914 Boathouse in the New Gibbons Residence parking lot. The lot is located off of the George Street Exit on Route 18 North.
