Heavyweight and Lightweight Rowing to Close Fall Schedule at Rutgers Fall Classic on Saturday
Nov. 8, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The two Navy men’s rowing programs will conclude their fall schedule on Saturday in New Brunswick, N.J. at the Rutgers Fall Classic. Both the heavyweight and lightweight teams will lean heavily on their plebe classes as competitors on Saturday. Racing for the Rutgers Fall Classic will be held on a 2.5-mile stretch of the Raritan River.
The heavyweight plebes are the two-time defending champions of the freshman/novice division event having won in 2010 and 2011. The 2012 Rutgers Fall Classic was cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
In a unique scoring format, each program will enter three boats in an event with the top two crews being “even” and racing to combine for the lowest overall time amongst the field.
"We are looking forward to racing our full plebe squad this weekend,” said Navy heavyweight coach Rob Friedrich. “The Class of 2017 has had a strong fall so far, and the format of the Rutgers Classic gives us a chance to develop our depth by racing even lineups. Rutgers does a great job of hosting this regatta, and it fills a very traditional role in our schedule by helping us get our entire plebe squad a chance to experience racing against teams we will see again in the spring."
"The goal this weekend will be to test our boatspeed and the progress we have made this fall with the plebes, as well as to see where we stack up against some very good freshmen programs. Two or three of these schools will field strong frosh eights this spring and be in the hunt for the Grand Final at the Eastern Sprints, so this a great chance to see where the plebes stand."
The field for the Classic will consist of a variety of Mid-Atlantic programs, including Penn, Georgetown and George Washington. In total, 25 crews will race in the Freshman 8, while 15 boats will race in the Varsity 4.
Similar to the heavyweights, the lightweight team will have three boats racing in the Freshman 8. The 150’s will also enter three boats in the Varsity 4.
“The Navy 150 coaching staff is looking forward to seeing all our plebes on the water Saturday,” said Navy lightweight coach Shawn Bagnall. “It should be a great day of racing to close the chapter on our fall season."
For fans wishing to watch the action, they are asked to park on the Cook/Douglass Campus near the Class of 1914 Boathouse in the New Gibbons Residence parking lot. The lot is located off of the George Street Exit on Route 18 North.
