Junior Quarterback Zach Abey Named NAAA Athlete of the Week
Jan. 2, 2018
Junior quarterback Zach Abey was named NAAA Athlete of the Week for his performance in Navy's 49-7 victory over Virginia in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. Abey came off the bench to rush for 88 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries to lead Navy to its fourth bowl win in the last five years.
Abey's five rushing touchdowns tied the FBS record for rushing touchdowns in a bowl game, sharing the record with Toledo's Kareem Hunt (2015), Terrance Ganaway of Baylor (2011), Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State (1988) and Neil Snow of Michigan (1902). His five rushing touchdowns are also an American Athletic Conference record for any game and is tied for the fourth-most rushing touchdowns in school history in any game.
Abey finished the 2017 campaign with 1,413 yards and 19 touchdowns on 293 carries (4.8 yards per carry). The 1,413 yards rushing are the second-most in school history for a single season, trailing only Napoleon McCallum (1,587 in 1983).
Navy kicks off the 2018 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Hawai'i.
