Anthony Gargiulo and Sean Williams Named 2018 Navy Football Team Captains
ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo announced Friday night at the annual Navy football banquet that rising seniors Anthony Gargiulo (Freehold, N.J.) and Sean Williams (Memphis, Tenn.) have been elected team captains for the 2018 football season by their teammates.
"Being elected team captain at the Naval Academy is one of the highest honors you can receive at an institution that prides itself on producing great leaders,” said Niumatalolo. “Anthony and Sean are not only outstanding football players, but they are great leaders in the locker room and in Bancroft Hall and I have no doubt that they will be great captains for us.”
Gargiulo had a breakthrough junior campaign at fullback, rushing for 423 yards and three touchdowns on 76 carries (5.6 yards per carry). He came off the bench against SMU to rush for a career high 145 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and then the following week, making his second-career start, ran for 87 yards on 20 carries and caught a 21-yard pass in South Bend against Notre Dame.
Williams has started 25 games in his career, including 12 in 2017. He was named Honorable Mention All-American Athletic Conference this past fall as he finished second on the team in tackles with 76, while picking off a pass and recovering a fumble.
Navy opens up the 2018 campaign on Sept. 1 at Hawai’i.
