ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Naval Academy is planning a season-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, including honoring the 1959 Navy team that defeated William & Mary in the first game played at the stadium. Additionally, an all-time Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium team will be selected with fans having an opportunity to nominate and vote for their favorite Navy players who have played at the stadium.
The Naval Academy and the Leffler Agency have designed a logo to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (see attached). The logo will be displayed on the home game uniforms and will be featured throughout the year on game tickets, the team poster, schedule card, media guide and on the web site.
Navy plays host to Western Kentucky on Sept. 26, the exact date of the first game played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Members of the 1959 team that defeated William & Mary, 29-2, will be honored at halftime. There will also be a 1959-themed tailgate in NavyFest featuring vintage cars from that era.
The highlight of the year will be the announcement of an all-time Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium team. Starting today (Feb. 16) and running through April 6, fans will be directed to www.navysports.com where they can nominate players for the all-time Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium team. The only stipulation is the player must have played at least one season at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
A committee will then take the nominations and pair them down to a select number of players at each position. Starting April 13 fans will have the opportunity to vote for the all-time team at www.navysports.com. Fan voting will be worth 50 percent towards the final selection of the team with a committee of Navy football historians determining the other 50 percent of the vote. The all-time team will be revealed at halftime throughout the 2009 season.
