Transcript of Navy Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's comments

April 8, 2006

Q. What did you think?

A. I thought they competed a little bit. The defense played a little better than last week for sure. The offense moved the ball, but when we got down to the end they were able to keep them out of the end zone, which is good. We only played Hampton one series.

Q. Does he have a shoulder injury?

A. He could have played, but he's kind of banged up a little bit so there was no use to play him, especially in this weather. We will look at the film and see.

Q. With some of the mishandled snaps, do you just blame that on the weather?

A. We haven't had that all spring and then we had it today. It makes it hard to play, especially with us when we need three downs to make a first down and when you kill yourself by dropping snaps it makes it hard to overcome.

Q. Did today's weather make it hard to evaluate?

A. I don't know. You can evaluate. I saw some good things. I saw some blocks. I saw some nice tackles. I saw some guys make plays. I also saw some guys not playing hard.

Q. You said last week after the offense really moved the ball that it could turn around in a heartbeat and it did today, the defense played pretty good today.

A. It's all relative. You guys get too caught up in that stuff. You shouldn't be able to drive the ball 70 yards every time. I don't get caught up in that. I just watch guys play. The offense could have kicked field goals several times, but I wanted to go for it so I could see guys compete. I want them to understand the importance of fourth down. We aren't keeping score out here. Nobody won out here today. I want to see both sides do some good. It doesn't matter if you score nine million touchdowns or no touchdowns nobody won. We don't get any wins or losses in spring ball. We are just trying to get better.

Q. Tidwell is all right?

A. I think so.

Q. Has there been any kind of separation at quarterback behind Hampton?

A. We will have to look at the film, but I don't think so.

Q. Kaipo sure can run.

A. They are freshmen. I see things that everybody else doesn't see. They hold the ball too long. There were a couple of times on the option that Kaipo could have scored, could have walked in, but he ran right into the guy that was getting blocked. Now, he has some ability. He has some speed.

Q. But you are going to have to start sorting that out and figure out who your No. 2 is coming out of spring ball.

A. Really? We don't play for a long time. I feel like I have a lot of time to sort that out. I have all fall camp if I need it.
