Navy Senior Guard Evan Martin Named To The Outland Trophy Watch List
July 13, 2017
Navy senior offensive guard Evan Martin has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List by the Football Writers Association of America. Martin is one of nine linemen from the American Athletic Conference to make the list.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
Martin started all 14 games for the Mids last fall and was named Honorable Mention All-American Athletic Conference. Martin helped pave the way for an offense that finished the year ranked #1 in the country in third down conversion pct. (54.5), #3 in passing yards per completion (19.29), #4 in rushing offense (310.1), #5 in tackles for loss allowed (4.21) and #7 in team passing efficiency (164.17). Navy scored 60-plus points in back-to-back games (66 at East Carolina, 75 at SMU) for just the second time in program history and the first time since 1917.
Navy opens the 2017 campaign on Friday, Sept. 1 at Florida Atlantic and will return home the following week to host American Athletic Conference foe Tulane. The Mids will also play host to Cincinnati (Sept. 23), Air Force (Oct. 7), UCF (Oct. 21) and SMU (Nov. 11). The annual Army-Navy Game presented by USAA will be played on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
