DALLAS, Texas —  The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday that Navy senior slot back Gee Gee Greene (Columbia, S.C.) is one of 52 preseason candidates for the 2012 Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.

A starter in each of the last 25 games dating back to the 2010 season, Greene was instrumental in leading the Midshipmen to a No. 4 national ranking a year ago in rushing offense, as Navy averaged 312.25 yards per game on the ground.  He is coming off a solid junior campaign which saw him rush for 501 yards on 64 carries and score three touchdowns.  Additionally, he caught 11 passes in 2011, four of which went for touchdowns.  He enters his senior year having rushed for 1,246-career yards on 177 carries and scored seven touchdowns.  Meanwhile, he has averaged 7.0 yards per carry over his career which is the program’s fifth-best rushing average.

Navy opens its 2012 season with a Sept. 1 battle against Notre Dame at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
