Navy senior outside linebacker Keegan Wetzel has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Wetzel is now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Wetzel has enjoyed a spectacular senior campaign so far for the 6-3 Midshipmen, recording 52 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, six sacks, a pass break-up and a fumble recovery. He leads Navy in tackles for a loss and sacks and is just two sacks away from third place on Navy's single-season sacks list.
Wetzel is also a star in the classroom, carrying a 3.89 grade point average in systems engineering (honors courses). He scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT test and is believed to be the only current FBS player to garner a perfect score.
Navy had not had a First-Team Academic All-American for 30 years until John Dowd was named a First-Team Academic All-American in 2010 and 2011. Navy has never had a First-Team Academic All-American in three-consecutive years.
