GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Navy men's golf team shot a 17-over par 305 in Tuesday’s final round of the spring-opening Snowman Getaway at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. to finish 16th among the 17-team field.
The Mids opened the day in 11th, but struggled to match their scores from the first day of action. Navy shot a 1-over par 289 in Monday’s opening round and followed up with a 2-over par 290 in the afternoon session.
Junior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Mids on Tuesday, as the pair shot a 3-over par 75. Jonas closed out the tournament as Navy’s low scorer, shooting par (71-70-75 = 216) and finishing in a tie for 31st. Selby, meanwhile, placed 69th with a 9-over par 225 (73-77-75), as did rookie Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) (74-74-77). Junior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) began the day in 34th, but slipped to 62nd after registering a 6-over par 78 in the final round. He finished with a 54-hole mark of 223 (71-74-78). Rounding out the group for Navy was senior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) who placed 92nd with a 16-over par 232 (79-72-81).
Illinois State (298-278-273) was crowned the champion after tying Air Force (276-287-286) with a 15-under par 849. Illinois State was sixth heading into the final round and shot a tournament-low 15-under par 273 on Tuesday to wedge itself into a tie with the Falcons. The tie breaker was determined by the low final round team score instead of the fifth-man score because Air Force had a player drop out of the tournament on Tuesday. Gonzaga placed third (288-289-278 = 855), followed by William & Mary (284-288-286 = 858) and Utah Valley State (285-288-287 = 860).
The Mids finished 5 strokes behind 14th-place Murray State (297-295-287 = 879) and South Dakota (292-286-301 = 879) and 5 strokes ahead of SIU Edwardsville (293-303-303 = 899).
St. John’s senior Ryan McCormick, meanwhile, took the individual title with a 15-under par 201 (64-68-69), while Arizona State send three players to play on an individual basis and they finished second, third and fourth.
The Midshipmen return to action March 12-13 when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take part in the Bulldog Florida Invitational.
