Navy Golf Opens Spring Season at Charleston Shootout
Senior Collier Jones is leading the way for the Mids in 21st.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Navy golf team kicked off the spring season on Monday at the Charleston Shootout where the Mids stand 13th out of 14 teams. Navy shot a 14-over par 302 in the opening round at the Links at Stono Ferry and finished off the day with a 15-over par 303 in the second round for a 29-over par 605.
Defending National Champion Augusta State held a 1-stroke advantage over Florida going into the second round, however, the Gators blistered the field in the afternoon where they shot a low round of 13-under to take the lead. Florida stands atop the leader board with a 19-under par 557 (282-275), while Augusta State (281-288=569) is in second with a 2-stroke advantage over Radford (285-286=571). Meanwhile, Presbyterian (286-289) and Charleston Southern (286-291) are tied for fourth with a 1-under par 575.
The Mids were in 12th place going into the second round on Monday, holding a 6-stroke lead over Western Kentucky (308) and Stetson (308). While Navy and Stetson shot identical 15-over par 303's, the Hilltoppers leap-frogged over Navy by turning in a 6-over par 294 in the afternoon round. Western Kentucky holds a 3-stroke advantage over the Mids heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Leading the way for the Midshipmen is senior Collier Jones (Little Rock, Ark.), who was outstanding in the opening round. Jones, who entered the fall with a 75.9 stroke average, shot a Navy-low 1-under par 71 in the first round of the tournament and followed up with a 3-over par 75. He enters the final round tied for 21st with a 2-over par 146.
Rookie August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) is among the top 50 after putting together a 6-over par 150 over the first two rounds. Jonas, who was one of four Navy players to score a 6-over par 77 in the first round, came back to shoot 1-over in the afternoon.
Sitting in 59th place is Navy senior Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.), who was able to shave one stroke off his opening-round score, putting together a two-round mark of 153 (+9). Reilly owned Navy's low stroke average heading into the spring season, posting a 74.3 average.
Sophomores David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) and Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) shot mirroring scores (77-79=156) on Monday and are tied for 73rd, while team captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) rounds out the Navy roster in 77th with a 13-over par 157 (78-79).
