HOLLYWOOD, S.C. —  The Navy golf team opened its spring campaign this week by shooting an 82-over par 946 to place 11th at the two-day, 36-hole Charleston Shootout played at The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.

USC Upstate, who had three players finish among the top 15 including two in the top 10, won the tournament by 5 strokes over Sam Houston State, putting together a 17-over par 881 which featured the Spartans shooting par (288) in the second round.  Sam Houston State shot the second-lowest round of the day on Tuesday with a 10-over par 298, but fell short in its quest for the title, finishing second with a 22-over par 886.  Bethune-Cookman placed third (+26, 890), followed by Charleston Southern (+30, 894) and Fairleigh Dickinson (+34, 898).

Coastal Carolina’s Easton Renwick, College of Charleston’s John Duke Hudson and Clemson’s Hayden Garrett finished atop the leader board by shooting par (216).  Renwick was the favorite going into the final round, but shot a 5-over 77 while Garrett was 1-over and Hudson was 2-over in the final round to pull even with Renwick.  Renwick, however, was able to prevail, winning on the third playoff hole.

The Mids, who finished 23 strokes ahead of 12th-place Hofstra and 16 strokes behind 10th place Connecticut, were paced by sophomore August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) who opened up the tournament by shooting par (72).  Jonas went on to post a 3-over par 75 in the second round and an 8-over par 80 in the final round for a 36-hole mark of 11-over par 227 to tie for 35th.  Junior Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 8 strokes back in 57th with a 19-over par 235, while junior Bobby Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) placed 68th with a 28-over par 244.  Sophomore Staton Pruitt (Columbia, S.C.) shot a 20-over par 245 to finish 69th, while local product Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) shot the Mids’ low round of the day on Tuesday with a 4-over par 76.  Moyer also placed 69th in the tournament.

Navy juniors Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) and David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) played in the tournament as individuals with House placing 64th with a 24-over par 240, while Hall finished 69th with a 29-over par 245.

The Midshipmen will be back in action at the end of the month when they compete in the Whiting Turner Invitational in Grasonville, Md. on March 31 through April 2.
