2013 Whiting Turner Towson Invitational - Rd. 1 Results
GRASONVILLE, Md. — Led by rookie Zeke Shaffer’s (Radford, Va.) 3-over par 75, the Navy golf team stands 11th out of 24 teams following the opening round of the 54-hole Whiting Turner Towson Invitational played at the Prospect Bay Golf Course in Grasonville, Md. on Easter Sunday. The Mids put together a 22-over par 310 to position themselves in 11th, 19 strokes behind leader William & Mary and one stroke behind the eighth-place trio of Binghamton, Iona and Towson.
“We struggled with the speed of the greens today, but I thought we hit the ball well,” said Navy head coach Pat Owen. “I look for us to continue to strike the ball well and manage the greens better as we settle in.”
Shaffer, who made his lone appearance prior to this weekend at the season-opening Navy Fall Classic in September, is 13th among the individual standings, 7 strokes behind tournament leader Jeremy Wells of William & Mary (-4, 68).
“Zeke had a great juniors resume and I think it probably took a semester for him to get adjusted to the collegiate game and lifestyle,” said Owen. “He has a tremendous attitude and work ethic and I think he could be a pleasant addition to our lineup if he continues to play like he has.”
Sophomore August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) put together a 5-over par 77 to finish 35th after the opening round, while junior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) is a stroke back in 47th. Junior David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) and rookie Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) are tied for 65th in the standings after turning in an 8-over par 80.
Monday’s second round is slated to tee off at 8:00 am with the Midshipmen part of the afternoon wave which is on tap to begin at 12-noon.
