Navy Men’s Golf Places 13th at Clemson Invitational

SALEM, S.C. —  Senior team captain Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) turned in a final-round 78 to tie for 51st place and lead the Navy men’s golf team to a 13th-place finish at the Clemson Invitational Sunday at the par 72 The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C.

The host Clemson Tigers, ranked 18th nationally, was the lone team in the field to finish under par, as the Tigers finished 6-under (294-280-284=858) to take the team title at the Clemson Invitational for a second straight year.  Twenty-first ranked Georgia Tech took second at 9-over (873), followed by Alabama (+34, 878), SMU (+21, 885) and College of Charleston (+22, 886).

UNC Wilmington’s Patrick Cover took individual medalist honors after playing a spectacular final round.  He jumped from 16th to first after shooting a 7-under par 65 over the final 18 holes and completing the tournament at 5-under (76-70-65=211).

Playing among a power-packed field, the Midshipmen finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 958 (+94).  Navy improved its score each round, opening with a 328, followed by rounds of 318 and 312.  Tallman shot the low score in each of the first two rounds with an 80 and a 77 before closing out the tournament with a 6-over par 78.  He finished tied for 51st with a 235 (+19).

Shooting Navy’s low round of the tournament was sophomore Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) who turned in a 2-over par 74 over the final 18 holes.  He tied for 57th with a 237 (83-80-74) and was followed by sophomore Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) in 66th (81-81-79=241), freshman Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) in 68th (84-80-81=245) and junior Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) in 69th (90-83-86=259).  

Navy will send five players - Ben Allen (Sr / San Marino, Calif.), Paul Mauer (So / Eagleville, Pa.), Connor Jaenke (Fr / Arnold, Md.), Ethan Mead (Jr / Charlotte, N.C.) and Devin Terry (Sr / La Crosse, Wis.) - to the one-day, 36-hole Finegan Invitational slated to be played on Monday at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.  The tournament is being hosted by LaSalle University.
