Mead Paces Mids to 11th-Place Finish at Finegan Invitational
LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. — Junior Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) put together an 8-over par 152 to tie for 21st place and lead the Navy men’s golf team to an 11th-place finish at the Finegan Invitational Monday at the par 72 Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
Longwood leap-frogged Drexel over the final 18 holes with a 3-over par 291 to complete the one-day, 36-hole tournament with a 10-over par 586 to claim the title. Drexel, meanwhile, fell just a stroke shy of tying Longwood as the Dragons put together rounds of 291 and 296 to finish 11-over (587). Rounding out the top five were Villanova (306-295=601), Lehigh (314-291=605) and Delaware (304-301-605). Longwood’s Jordan Boulton finished the day 4-under par (69-71=140) to take individual medalist honors.
The Midshipmen opened the tournament with a 24-over par 312 and closed out the afternoon session with a 28-over par 316 to finish the day at 52-over and in 11th place. Navy was just two strokes out of the top 10 and two strokes ahead of 12th-place Rosemont.
Mead shot the two lowest rounds of the day for the Mids with a 75 in the opening round, followed by a 77 in the afternoon to finish 8-over and just out of the top 20. Senior Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.) put together back-to-back rounds of 79 to tie for 44th at 14-over. Sophomore Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) tied for 52nd at 160 (80-80), Devin Terry (Sr / La Crosse, Wis.) was 56th at 162 (82-80) and Connor Jaenke (Fr / Arnold, Md.), who posted a 6-over par 78 in the opening round, fell in at 62nd with a 164.
The Mids return to the links a week from Saturday when they play host to the annual Navy Spring Invitational April 22-23.
