2013 Princeton Invitational - Final Results
PRINCETON, N.J. — The Navy golf team concluded play at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday afternoon, placing ninth in the 14-team field. The Mids shot 303-300-300 — 903 in the 54-hole tournament played at the par-72 Springdale Country Club in Princeton, N.J.
Yale shot rounds of 294-279-295 — 868 to pace the field by two shots over Temple (870) and three shots over host Princeton (871). Columbia placed fourth (877), followed by Penn (878), Harvard (885), Brown (894), Dartmouth (895), Navy (903), Cornell (911), Seton Hall (918), St. Joseph’s (919), Georgetown (926) and Rider (955).
“I like how we hit the ball this weekend,” said Navy head coach Pat Owen. “We are still a little rusty around the greens and need to tighten things up just a bit, but we did a nice job of finishing up strong and were able to move up a spot in the standings. It’s a tricky course, but I thought overall we managed it well.”
Second-year standout August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) was the Mids’ top placewinner, shooting a 76-71-77 — 224 to finish tied for 24th. His 1-under par 71 in Saturday’s second round marked the low round among the five Navy golfers on the weekend.
Meanwhile, junior Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) fell in a stroke behind Jonas in 32nd with a 12-over par 225. Selby closed out play in Sunday’s final round by shooting par.
Junior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) turned in a 16-over par 229 to finish in 43rd, while rookie Zeke Shaffer (Radford, Va.) slipped back to 43rd despite pacing the Mids in the opening round with a 2-over par 74. Shaffer posted a 7-over par 79 in the final round for his 17-over par 229.
Rounding out the lineup was junior David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.), who rebounded nicely after struggling in the second round. Hall shot 10-over par 82 in Saturday’s afternoon round, however, he came back to score a 2-over par 74 over the final 18 holds to post a 20-over par 233.
The Mids will play host to the annual Navy Spring Invitational next Saturday and Sunday at the Navy Academy Golf Club as a final tune-up for the Patriot League Championship the following weekend.
