WEST POINT, N.Y. — Navy junior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) was able to hold off a barrage of Loyola players in the final round, but couldn’t hang on to the top spot as Army’s Peter Kim (73-66-70=209) took medalist honors and Jonas finished five strokes behind in second with a 4-over par 214 (69-69-76) at the 2014 Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship at West Point. Meanwhile, the Mids shot a 34-over par 314 in the final round to slide from third to fourth in the final standings with a 60-over par 900.
Five of Loyola’s six golfers finished among the top 11, including three in the top five to guide the first-year Patriot League members to the 2014 Patriot League Championship with a 21-over par 861 (287-283-291). The Greyounds put together the low round of the day with an 11-over par 291 to hold off the host Army Black Knights, who finished 10 strokes behind with an 871 (295-280-296).
Lehigh, who stood second after the first round and fourth after the second round, was able to leapfrog Navy and finish third with a 56-over par 896 (293-301-302). The Mids finished four strokes behind the Mountain Hawks in fourth with a 900 (294-292-314), while Bucknell finished fifth (306-299-297=902), Colgate was sixth (305-298-303=906), Lafayette was seventh (315-303-308=926) and Holy Cross placed eighth (310-306-316=932).
“We really struggled putting today as a team,” said Navy head coach Pat Owen. “The pin positions were fairly tricky today and we just couldn’t get things going.”
Jonas stood atop the leader board heading into Sunday’s round with just a one-stroke advantage over Kim and Loyola’s Jimmy Dengler. Kim was one of three players to shoot par or lower in the final round, while Jonas was 6-over for the day. Kim was named the Most Outstanding Golfer by way of his victory and also picked up Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors.
Jonas scored First-Team All-Patriot League recognition by placing among the top five, as did Loyola’s Matt Oshrine (70-76-69=215) and Jimmy Dengler (71-68-76=215) who tied for third and teammate Brendan Lemp (73-69-74=216) who finished fifth.
“The entire team was proud of Augie,” added Owen. “He was over par early in the round and kept fight his way back. He had a birdie on the last hole to finish alone in second place.”
Navy senior Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) and rookie Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) were both 10 over in Sunday’s round to finish 18th and 21st, respecitvely. Selby shot a 228 (76-72-80) in his final collegiate competition, while Terry posted a 229 (74-75-80). Junior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) shot an 8-over par 78 on Sunday to remain in 25th with a 232 (76-78-78), while seniors Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) and Bobby Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) close out their careers in 29th (75-76-83=234) and 42nd (79-77-84=240), respectively.
