2012 Patriot League Golf Championship Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Anchored by seniors Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.), the Navy golf team put together an 18-over par 578 to lead the field following the first 36 holes of play at the Patriot League Championship played Saturday at the Bucknell University Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa. The Midshipmen own a 7-stroke advantage over second-place Army (585, +25) and an 8-stroke lead over the host Bucknell Bison (586, +26).
"It was a total team performance today," said Pat Owen, who is in his 22nd year as head coach of the Midshipmen. "I thought we executed our game plan well and hope to keep that discipline tomorrow. We just need to continue to play the golf course and not get caught up in the things that are not in our control."
Saturday's action began roughly an hour late, as the tournament field waited for the frost to lift from the course after chilly overnight lows in Lewisburg. Navy went on to take the early advantage after carding the day's low round over the first 18 holes with a 4-over par 288. Going into the second round, the Mids led then second-place Bucknell by five strokes and third-place Army by seven.
Navy turned in a 6-over par 290 over the second 18 holes, as did Army, while Bucknell matched its first-round score of a 9-over par 293 to slip behind Army by a stroke in the standings. Rounding out the field following the first day of play was Lehigh in fourth (591, +31), followed by Lafayette (595, +35), Colgate (608, +48) and Holy Cross (614, +54).
Three of the Mids' six players are among the field's top six, including Shield and Reilly who are tied for third with a 3-over par 143. Shield, Navy's team captain, scored a 2-under par 69 in the opening round and followed up with a 3-over par 74 in the nightcap, while Reilly opened the day shooting par and turned in a 1-over par 72 in the afternoon round. Shield had one of the more exciting moments of the day for the Midshipmen, as he closed out the day by sinking a 25-foot uphill birdie putt on the par-9 ninth hole.
The Navy pair trail Bucknell freshman Peter Scialabba who is 1-over (141), while Army's William Park stands second with a 2-over par 142.
Meanwhile, Navy freshman August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) is four strokes behind the leader in sixth where he has put together a 5-over par 145. Jonas produced a 2-over par 73 in the morning round before carding a 1-over par 72 over the final 18 holes.
After struggling in the opening round with an 8-over par 79, sophomore Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) regained his composure and shot a 1-over par 72 in the afternoon round to finish the day 11-over in 17th place.
Senior Tyler Kuhn (Prospect, Ky.) stands 28th with a 15-over par 155 (75-80), while defending Patriot League Rookie of the Year David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) is in 31st with a 16-over par 156 (81-75).
