LEWISBURG, Pa. —  The Navy men’s golf team (572, +12) is tied with Lafayette for fifth place following 36 holes of play on the opening day of the 2017 Patriot League Championship played at the Bucknell Golf Club on Saturday.  The Mids fired off an 8-over par 288 in the first round and followed up with a 4-over par 284 to close out the day just a stroke behind fourth-place Colgate (284-287=571).

“We finished 36 holes with some terrific scores today, but we were unable to keep pace with the front runners,” said Navy head coach Pat Owen.  “Our goal is to keep lowering our score tomorrow and climb up the leaderboard.”

Army (275-279) and Loyola (280-274) are leading the field at an unprecedented pace, as both teams carded a 6-under par 554.  The Patriot League Championship record for the lowest 54-hole score is 847 set by Army in 2002.  If both team shoot today’s average, they would break the record by 16 strokes.

Five Army players are among the top 20, including Peter Kim who is pacing the field with a 9-under par 131.  Kim, the 2014 Patriot League Player of the Year, fired a 7-under par 63 in the second round, breaking Patriot League Championship and Bucknell Golf Club records.  He leads Bucknell sophomore JP Raftery, the defending Patriot League Rookie of the Year, by four strokes with Raftery sitting at 5-under par 135 heading into the final round.

Loyola, meanwhile, has five players that are among the top 10, including Connor Flach who put together rounds of 66 and 71 to finish the day in third at three-under (137).

Navy is also playing at a program-record pace.  A year ago the Mids’ finished second with a 54-hole mark of 872, its lowest Patriot League Championship score since its first season competing in the league in 1992.  If Navy keeps up its current pace, it would finish this year’s event with an 858.

Team captain Connor Tallman (Sr / Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Griffin Peters (So / Fountain Hills, Ariz.) are leading the way for the Mids in 15th with a 3-over par 143.  Tallman shot par in the opening round before closing out the day with a 73, while Peters began the day 2-over and shaved off a stroke over the final 18 with a 71.

Thomas Fricke (Jr / Haymarket, Va.) and Matthew Starobin (So / Davidsonville, Md.) are knotted up in 20th with a 4-over par 141.  Fricke was five over through the first 18, but came back to shoot the low round of the day for the Mids with a 1-under 69.  The 69 also marked the lowest round of his career.  Starobin shot rounds of 73 and 71.

Rounding out the Navy squad in 39th and 45th, respectively, are Thomas Garbee (Fr / Asheville, N.C.) and Ethan Mead (Jr / Charlotte, N.C.) who are making their Patriot League Championship debut.

Sunday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am with Lehigh and Holy Cross paired up.  Navy will tee off alongside Colgate and Lafayette beginning at 9:00 am.  Fans can following live scoring via BirdieFire.
