2017 Patriot League Men's Golf Championship: Final Results

LEWISBURG, Pa. —  Anchored by the play of All-Patriot League performers Griffin Peters (So / Fountain Hills, Ariz.) and Matthew Starobin (So / Davidsonville, Md.), Navy shot a three-round 15-over par 855 (288-284-283) to place fourth at the 2017 Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship played at the Bucknell Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.  The 855 marked the lowest score by the Midshipmen in the 26-year history of the league’s championship.

Army West Point and Loyola came into Sunday’s final round tied up at 554, but it would be the Greyhounds’ day to shine as they posted the day’s low round at 1-over to claim their third Patriot League men’s golf title in the last four years with an 835 (280-274-281).  The Hounds’ 835 smashed the Patriot League Championship record which was previously set by Army in 2002 with an 847.

Not only did Loyola break the previous Championship mark, each of the top three teams shot better marks.  Army, who was led by individual medalist senior Peter Kim (68-63-69=200), took second by shooting par (275-279-286=840) over the three rounds.  The host Bucknell Bison closed out the tournament in third with a 5-over par 845 (276-285-284).  Navy placed fourth, followed by Lehigh (293-286-280=859) in fifth, Lafayette (284-288-294=866) in sixth, Colgate (284-287-299=870) in seventh and Holy Cross (289-300-308=897) in eighth.

The Mids moved up one spot in the standings following an incredible pace put forth by the front runners.  Navy improved its mark in each of the three rounds to shoot its lowest 54-hole score in Championship history by 17 strokes.  Last year, the Mids took second at the Championship by posting an 872 which at that point stood as their lowest score in tournament history.

Peters and Starobin paced the Mids in the final round and in doing so garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition for their seventh-place finish.  Starobin, who came into the final round in 20th, shot the low round of the tournament for the Mids with a 2-under par 68 that featured a hole-in-one on the 13th hole.  It marked just the fourth hole in one in Patriot League Championship history.

Peters, meanwhile, pushed up from 15th in the standings after carding a 1-under par 69 on Sunday.  Both players finished with a 2-over par 212 which is tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score by a Navy player at the Patriot League Championship.  Billy Hurley shot a 209 (67-69-74) in 2002, while Brian Crum recorded a 212 a year later en route to winning the individual title.

Playing in his final Patriot League Championship was team captain Connor Tallman (Sr / Lake Oswego, Ore.) who placed 16th with a 5-over par 215 (70-73-72).  His previous two appearances Tallman shot a 235 and a 231.

“We had great leadership from our seniors this season, in particular our team captain Connor Tallman,” said Owen.  “He played a solid tournament this weekend to close out his career.”

Junior Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) placed 26th (75-69-76=220), Thomas Garbee (Fr / Asheville, N.C.) was 39th (73-78-75=226) and Ethan Mead (Jr / Charlotte, N.C.) was 42nd (78-77-74=229).
