Navy Golf Finishes 13th at NCAA Regional
2018 NCAA Regional (Norman, Okla.) - Final Results
NORMAN, Okla. — Making the program’s 12th NCAA Championship appearance, the Navy men’s golf team concluded play at the 2018 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional hosted by the University of Oklahoma on Wednesday by posting a 57-over par 921 (323-302-296) and placing 13th.
Third-ranked and host Oklahoma defended its home course by leading the field with a 14-under par 850. Meanwhile, BYU and North Florida both closed out the tournament just a stroke behind (851) and Auburn and Arkansas rounded out the top five advancing teams with a 3-under par 861. North Florida’s Travis Trace (205, -11) shot a 7-under par 65 in the final round to jump from sixth and claim individual medalist honors over BYU’s Patrick Fishburn who placed second with a 10-under par 206.
While the Mids struggled in the opening round (323, +35), they rallied to shoot 302 (+14) and 296 (+8) in the final two rounds. Junior Paul Mauer (Jr / Eagleville, Pa.), who began the tournament as Navy’s alternate, was inserted into the lineup in Tuesday’s second round where he provided the team a needed boost. Mauer carded a 4-over par 76, followed by a 3-over par 75 in the final round to pace the team in 47th with a 7-over par 151.
Junior Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) shot the low round of the tournament for the Mids in Wednesday’s final round, carding a 1-under par 71. He finished the tournament tied for 57th with a 10-over par 226 (77-78-71). Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.), the 2018 Patriot League Individual Medalist, closed out his rookie campaign placing 6th with a 15-over par 231 (80-74-77). Meanwhile, Thomas Garbee (So / Asheville, N.C.) finished 75th with a 33-over par 249 (81-84-84).
“The guys became more comfortable with the golf course each day,” said 2018 Patriot League Coach of the Year Pat Owen. “At 7,400 yards, every shot is a challenge!
“Paul and Griffin really played well for us this week,” said Owen. “With all four of these guys returning next season, I think we’ve seen just a glimpse of what the future holds for our program.”
Team captain Thomas Fricke (Sr / Haymarket, Va.) made his final appearance representing the Naval Academy by shooting his low round over the final 18. Fricke opened the tournament with a 13-over par 85, but just like the entire Navy squad, Fricke regrouped and played terrific over the final 36 holes where he posted marks of 74 (+2) and 73 (+1). The soon-to-be Ensign in the United States Navy finished 68th with a 16-over par 232.
“Thomas played well today and it was particularly nice to see him play the last several holes of his career under par,” added Owen. “He’s been a terrific four-year starter for us and his leadership and work ethic set the bar for our season.”
