ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Producing a 38-over par 322, the Navy golf team stands 13th following Thursday's opening round of the 2012 NCAA Golf Regional held at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Mids trail 12th-place Ohio State by 17 strokes.
No. 43 TCU owns an eight-stroke lead on the field, shooting a 6-under 278. Kent State, ranked 18th, is second at 2-over 286, while No. 42 Kennesaw State and No. 19 Virginia are tied for third at 3-over 287. No. 7 Oregon, meanwhile, settled in at fifth with a 4-over 288.
Baylor senior men's golfer and 2012 Big 12 Conference champion Joakim Mikkelsen is tied with TCU's Julien Brun and USC's Anthony Paolucci atop the leader board, as each shot a first-round 4-under 67.
The Midshipmen, who are making their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2008, are led by rookie August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) who turned in a 7-over par 78 to tie for 60th after the first 18 holes of play. Sophomore Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) is a stroke behind in 65th, followed by seniors Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) in 72nd (81, +10), team captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) in 74th (84, +13) and Tyler Kuhn (Prospect, Ky.) in 75th (86, +15).
"I think we went into the day with a solid game plan, but we didn't execute as well as we had hoped," said 22nd-year Navy head coach Pat Owen, who has led the Mids to six NCAA Tournaments since 1998. "We didn't strike the ball as well as we should have and found ourselves in some tough spots.
"That being said, the team is optimistic about the rest of tournament and is planning on taking it one round at a time. The goal is to go out and shoot the score each of them are capable of and capitalize on their short game."
Friday's second round is slated to begin at 8:00 am with Kuhn the first to tee-off for the Mids at approximately 9:40 am. Live scoring will once again be available at GolfStat.
