Chris Renninger Among Top 10 at Navy Fall Golf Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy Blue squad shot a 12-over par 296 in the opening round of the 2006 Navy Fall Golf Invitational and stands 10th heading into the final round. The other two Navy teams, Navy Gold (302, +18) and Navy White (311, +27) are in 14th and 17th (tied), respectively. Junior Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) owned the Mids' low round, shooting a 1-over par 72 for the Navy Blue team and will head into Sunday's final round in a 13-way tie for 10th place. Winthrop, George Washington and North Dakota State are tied for the lead with each team turning in a 5-over par 289. The trio holds just a one-stroke lead over St. Bonaventure and Loyola who each posted a 290. North Dakota State senior Eric Johnson shot the low round of the day with a 4-under par 67, while Loyola's Blake Ferguson trails by two strokes. While Renninger paced the Navy Blue squad, just four strokes separate him from the fifth-best score on the team. Sophomore Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) came in just outside of the top 20 with a 2-over par 73 and is tied for 23rd. Junior Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) is two strokes behind Renninger in 43rd, while sophomores Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) and Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) are deadlocked in 50th with a 5-over par 76. Sophomores John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.) and David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) are tied for 43rd to lead the Navy Gold team with a 4-over par 75. Juniors Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) are a stroke back with a 5-over par 76, while junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) rounds out the scoring in 87th with a 9-over par 80.
The Navy White team featured a pair of veterans in Josh Benson (Bloomington, Minn.) and Rob Phillips (Munford, Tenn.), while introducing newcomers John Fischer (West Des Moines, Iowa), John Moore (Winnetka, Ill.) and Joshua Howell (New Bern, N.C.). Phillips is atop the leader board for the white squad, as he turned in a 5-over par 76. Fischer, a sophomore, and Moore, a freshman, both produced a 7-over par 78 to tie for 70th. Benson, who sat out last spring recovering from shoulder surgery, owned an 8-over par 79. Rounding out the white team's scoring was Howell who posted a 16-over par 87. Navy freshman Andy Hutchison (Jonesboro, Ark.) is participating in the tournament as an individual and posted a 14-over par 85 in the opening round.
