PARAMUS, N.J. — Junior golfer Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Staton Pruitt (Columbia, S.C.) captured a 1-up victory over the Black Knights’ Robby Hill and Brandon Baerwaldt in four-ball action, however, Army holds a 3-1 advantage as the opening day of the annual Army-Navy Star Match came to a close on Saturday afternoon at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
The Black Knights’ Marcus Plunkett and Eric Peng, both freshmen, opened the day with a commanding victory over Navy’s Brad Elder (Roanoke, Va.) and Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.), 5&4. Elder, a sophomore, and House, a junior, both made their Army-Navy debuts, as did Pruitt and rookie Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.).
Navy junior David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) and Moyer surrendered a 2&1 battle to Army senior Matt Philie and Harrison Florence, while Army’s Anthony Kim and John Lee outlasted the Navy combo of Bobby Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) and August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.), 1-up.
The annual Star Match will conclude with seven singles matches on Sunday beginning at 8:30 am. The first team to six points is declared the winner.
