ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  Navy head coach Pat Owen had the luxury of splitting his men’s golf squad over the weekend, sending a team to LSU’s David Toms Intercollegiate and another to the Bucknell Fall Invitational where both had solid finishes.

Navy’s starting five placed 11th in what marked the Mids’ third consecutive appearance at the David Toms Intercollegiate played at the par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.  Moved up by a day and shortened by a round due to the threat of Hurricane Nate, Navy opened the tournament with a 32-over par 320, but shaved 14 strokes off that mark to move up a spot in the final standings with a 626 (320-306).  The Mids finished 10 strokes ahead of Nicholls State (317-319=636) and 11 ahead of New Orleans (325-312=637).  The host Tigers (288-277=565), meanwhile, won the tournament by 17 strokes over North Texas (291-291=582).

Junior Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) paced the Mids in 35th with a 153 (78-75), while senior team captain Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) shot the low round by a Navy player (74) on Saturday to finish in 47th with a 156 (82-74).  Junior Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) also tied for 47th with a 156 (80-76), while Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) (80-81=161) and Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.)(91-81=172) rounded out the field in 62nd and 72nd place respectively.

Fielding a team with one sophomore and four freshmen, Navy tied for 10th at the 17-team Bucknell Fall Invitational played at the par 70 Bucknell Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa.  The Mids turned in a 25-over par 305 in the opening round, but made up some ground over the final 18 where they carded a 15-over par 295.  Navy finished just two strokes out of the top eight where Monmouth and Ottawa tied with a 38-over par 598, while the Mids shared the 10th-place spot with Manhattan who put together rounds of 302 and 298.  Wayne State, meanwhile, beat out Bucknell by one stroke to win the team title with an 11-over par 571 (285-286).

Second-year player Connor Jaenke (Arnold, Md.) paved the way for the Mids with his first career top-20 finish.  Jaenke shot the Mids’ low mark in the opening round with a 2-over par 72 and followed up with a 74 to finish 6-over (146) and in 20th.

Just a stroke behind in 24th was rookie Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.) who posted rounds or 74 and 73 for a 147.  Freshman Ward Wilkinson (Ashland, Va.)bounced back from an opening-round 81 to shoot the Mids’ low round of the tournament with a 70 on Sunday to finish 11-over and in 41st.  Rounding out the squad’s scores were freshmen Jake Miles (Fredericksburg, Va.) in 76th (78-81=159) and Ryan Hicks (St. Petersburg, Fla.) in 88th (85-78=163).

“It was a valuable experience not only for us to send five players to one of the top tournaments in the David Toms Intercollegiate, but it was also terrific to give some of our younger players an opportunity to play at Bucknell,” said Owen.

The Mids will close out the fall portion of their schedule a week from Monday when they take part in the Georgetown Intercollegiate at the Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md.
