2010 The Classic at Shelter Harbor - Round 1 Results
WESTERLY, R.I. — Junior Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) turned in a 3-over par 74 to steer the Navy golf team into sixth place after the opening round of The Classic at Shelter Harbor in Westerly, R.I. on Saturday afternoon. Battling blustery conditions that saw wind gusts play havoc with the flight of the ball, the Midshipmen shot a 306, just seven strokes behind Columbia who leads the 16-team field with a 299.
Just a handful of strokes separate the tournament’s top five teams. Columbia holds just a one-stroke lead over second-place Harvard (300), followed by Rhode Island, Hartford and Penn who are all tied for third (302).
Shield covered the first nine holes with a 35 and followed up with a 39 to position himself within the top 10. Just a stroke behind Shield is team captain Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) who produced a 4-over 75 and stands 16th. Hayes shot the low round among his teammates over the back nine with a 37. Senior Rob Merkert (Severna Park, Md.) if 40th with a 7-over par 78, followed by Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) in 50th with a 79 (+8) and freshman David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) has found himself in a hole with a 15-over par 86 in 76th.
Play resumes Sunday with the final 18 holes on tap for a 9:00 am start.
