FORT WORTH, Texas -- Four Midshipmen placed in the top 10 individual standings to lead Navy to a third-place finish at the 14th annual Service Academy Golf Classic at the par-72 Trophy Club in Fort Worth, Texas Tuesday. Air Force topped the field with a 14-over par 1094 to win its 12-straight Reemstsma Trophy, followed by Army (1105, +25) and Navy finished six strokes behind the Black Knights. Navy trailed Air Force by just seven strokes after the opening day of play and held a one-stroke lead over the Black Knights. Army saved its best round for last, as it produced a 4-over par 364 in the final round to surge past the Mids, as Navy posted an 11-over par 371 on the final day. "Our guys played well," said Navy head coach Pat Owen, who pointed out his Mids owned an average of 74 over 54 holes. "Unfortunately, we did not have a good putting tournament, and that was the difference." Three Midshipmen garnered all-tournament kudos, including sophomore Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) who paced Navy with his 3-over par 219 (72-73-74) to finish tied for fourth. Junior Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) put together a 4-over par 220 (76-70-74) to place sixth, while senior Jeremy Garner (Fayetteville, Ga.) turned in a 1-over par 73 in the final round to finish eighth (75-76-73 -- 224). Sophomore Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) captured a 10th-place tie with his 10-over par 226 after rebounding from his opening-round 78. Second-year player Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.) (74-75-78 -- 227) finished just a stroke behind Stinson in 13th, while Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) (74-80-77 -- 231) followed in 15th, John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.) (79-78-80 -- 237) in 21st and David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) (80-81-80 -- 241) in 24th.
Added Owen, "We are looking forward to picking up where we left off in the spring season, culminating with a bid for the Patriot League Championship at West Point in April." |
