CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — In a vote conducted by the Patriot League men’s golf coaches and sports information directors, Navy has been picked to finish third at this year’s Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is slated to be played on April 26-27 at Army’s West Point Golf Course with the winner earning the league’s automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
Just one point was the difference between the top two schools in the poll, as Army edged Loyola in the voting. Despite earning one fewer first-place vote, the Black Knights claimed the top spot with 89 points and seven first-place votes. Loyola, meanwhile, tallied eight first-place votes and 88 points to nestle in at No. 2 in what is its first year as a member of the league. Navy, who has won the conference title six times, grabbed 71 votes to position itself in third followed by Lehigh (70), Bucknell (45), Lafayette (39), Colgate (31) and Holy Cross (15).
Lehigh is the defending Patriot League Champion, claiming the 2013 title by 7 strokes over Navy. Meanwhile, Navy senior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) returns after taking individual medalist honors a year ago, winning the tournament in dramatic fashion on the final hole.
The Midshipmen are in the midst of their spring season in which they have placed 16th (18) at the Snowman Getaway in Arizona, third (10) at the Bulldog Florida Invitational and 12th (13) at the weather-shortened Seahawk Intercollegiate in North Carolina. Navy will have two remaining tournaments to use as a tune-up for the conference championship, as it travels to New Jersey this weekend to take part in the Princeton Invitational and will play host to the annual Navy Spring Invitational on Friday and Saturday of Easter weekend.
