Navy Golf Returns to Links at Princeton Invite
April 11, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy men’s golf team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Princeton, N.J. to take part in the 28th annual Princeton Invitational. The 54-hole event played at the Springdale Golf Club is slated to begin on Saturday at 7:45 am, while the second round will follow at roughly 12:30 pm. Sunday’s final round is set for an 8:00 am start.
In addition to the Midshipmen, the 15-team field includes Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Rider, Rutgers, Saint Joseph’s, Seton Hall, Temple and Yale. Additionally, seven individual players will be playing the par-71 course that measure 6,390 yards.
Yale is the four-time defending champion, winning by two shots over Temple last year, while Temple’s Brandon Matthews and Matt Teesdale return after tying as individual medalists a year ago.
This weekend’s event marks the fourth tournament in which the Mids have competed this spring. Navy opened the spring in Arizona where it placed 16th at the Snowman Getaway, followed by a third-place performance at the Bulldog Florida Invitaitonal and a 12th-place effort at the Seahawk Intercollegiate nearly a month ago.
The Mids are anchored by the efforts of junior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) who owns a team-low 74.56 stroke average among the seven tournaments he has seen action in. He is one of four players who has registered a top-10 finish this year. Meanwhile, senior Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) boasts a 76.78 stroke average, joining Jonas as the only two players on the roster to play in all seven events.
Newcomer Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) has competed in four tournaments and owns a 75.70 stroke average, while senior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) has made appearances in six tournaments and holds a 77.60 stroke average. House was the Mids’ top finisher at their last outing, placing 54th with an 11-over par 155 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate.
Led by Jonas’ 11-over par 224, Navy finished ninth among 14 teams at last year’s Princeton Invitational with a 51-over par 903.
