HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Navy golf team is in a three-way tie for second after the first 27 holes of play at the 2004 Patriot League Golf Championship played at the Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, N.Y. Lehigh leads the tournament with a score of 470 (316-154), while Navy (317-155), Army and American are tied for second place with a first-day score of 472, just two strokes behind the Mountain Hawks.
"At this point, I think it's anybody's tournament," said Navy head coach Pat Owen, who has led the Mids to the league championship four times in the last five years. "It was a brutal day out on the course. I'd say it was probably 48 to 52 degrees out there and extremely windy. The wind gusts were 30 to 35 miles per hour, not to mention this is a tough course. I really look for a better performance out of our guys tomorrow."
Navy senior Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) not only paced the Mids with his 3-over par 111 (76-35), he is leading the tournament. Hurley holds a 4-stroke lead over four players who turned in a 27-hole mark of 115. Teammate and classmate Rob Stochel (Crown Point, Ind.) is in sixth with an 8-over par 116, as he and Hurley turned in 76's over the first 18 holes.
Juniors Braxton Mashburn (Memphis, Tenn.) and Rocky Novellino (Bayville, N.J.), along with senior Joey Kistler (Savannah, Ga.) all shot 84 over the first 18 holes of competition. Mashburn posted a 39 in the next nine for a 123 (tied for 23rd), Kistler turned in a 41 for a 125 (33rd) and Novellino posted a 42 for a 126 (35th). Rookie Bryan Stoniecki (Montgomery, Ill.) competed in his first Patriot League Tournament, producing a first-round 81 to accompany a 47 over the next nine holes (tied for 36th).
Navy will return to the course Sunday morning playing alongside arch rival, Army, and tournament leader, Lehigh.
