Links associated with this release: UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Navy golf team concluded regular-season action Sunday with a sixth-place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate played at the Penn State Blue Golf Course. Navy, who was in a three-way tie for fourth after the first 36 holes, finished its final 18 holes with a score of 299 for a three-round mark of 899. Winning the tournament was nine-time defending champion Penn State, who held an 18-stroke lead after the first day of action and ended the tournament with a 19-stroke advantage over James Madison, who posted a three-round 882. The biggest mover of the tournament was Princeton, who shot the lowest round Sunday and jumped from 11th to third with a final score of 888. Individually, Penn State's Andy Latowski shot par on the final day to hold off Princeton's Cassidy Traub who posted a 5-under par 66 in the final 18 holes. Though Navy sophomore Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) finished in a tie for 58th (84-73-78-235), he may have been the most talked about player Sunday afternoon. Crum produced a hole-in-one on the 17th hole (par 3, 186 yards) using a 6 iron. "We were real excited for Brian and his hole-in-one today," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "He hit the ball and it flew into the cup in the air. It was a huge highlight for both Brian and the team today." Navy's top finisher was freshman Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) who shot a 1-over par 72 on the final day for a three-round 218, tying for 11th with James Madison's Michael Gooden. Meanwhile, senior captain Kirk Glockner (Wilmington, N.C.) placed in a tie for 29th, shooting a 9-over par 225 for the tournament. Junior Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) finished tied for 41st with a 229 and Marty Keogh (Newark, Del.) produced a 239 for a 68th-place finish. "This was a really good tune-up for us leading into the NCAA Tournament," said Owen. "There was good competition here on a fabulous course. We're looking forward to the next two weeks when we can practice and prepare for the NCAA regionals." The Mids, who earned an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA Golf Championship after winning the Patriot League golf title a week ago, will learn where they will be playing when the selections and pairings for the 2001 NCAA Tournament are announced May 8. Regional action gets underway May 17 with sites slated for the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. (East), Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. (Central) and Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. (West). The finals will be played May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C. Pl.
