Reilly Recognized for Academic Success

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy senior Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) was one of five players from five different schools named to the 2012 Academic All-Patriot League Golf Team it was announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, Bucknell junior J.J. Szmadzinski was named the 2012 Patriot League Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year
A history major who is part of the Honors program at the Naval Academy, Reilly boasts a 3.48 grade-point average and is ranked in the top 21 percent of his graduating class of better than 1,000 students in acadedemic order of merit. He has been named to the Commandant's List in six of the seven semesters at the Academy, while earning Dean's List mention in each of the last three semesters. Reilly was also named the co-winner of the Naval Academy's McMurtry Award which is presented to the program's best honors history thesis.
A year ago, Reilly was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also received Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors.
A three-time Second-Team All-Patriot League golfer (2009, `10, `12), Reilly owns a team-low 75.1 stroke average which is the program's fourth-lowest single-season stroke average in the last nine years. He has participated in 11 events this season where he recorded five top-10 performances, including four top-five finishes. Among his top-10 marks was a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Patriot League Championship held last weekend at Bucknell where he helped lead Navy to its sixth Patriot League team title. By way of their Patriot League crown, the Midshipmen have received an automatic berth to play in the NCAA Regionals at a site to be determined on May 17-19.
Reilly, who will graduate from the Naval Academy on June 1, will be commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and will serve as a submarine officer.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
