ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After its arrival in Corvallis, Ore. Tuesday afternoon and a practice round today, the Navy golf team is set to start competition Thursday morning at the Trysting Tree Golf Course - the site of the 2001 NCAA West Golf Regional. Navy, who earned its NCAA regional bid by way of winning the Patriot League golf title, is making its second-consecutive appearance in NCAA regional play. Last year, Navy played at Fresno State and finished tied for 24th out of 27 teams.

"We got a taste of what the NCAA Golf Championship was like last year and we are excited about the opportunity to head west and try to improve on our standing," said Navy head golf coach Pat Owen.

Twenty-seven teams make up each of the three regions, with the other two regions hosted by Oklahoma State and Virginia Commonwealth. The top 10 teams from each region, in addition to the top two individuals not on one of the top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 30-June 2 at Duke.

Navy is one of nine conference champions competing in Corvallis. The Mids are joined by BYU (Mountain West), USC (Pac-10), Pepperdine (West Coast), Oral Roberts (Mid-Continent), Austin Peay (Ohio Valley), California-Irvine (Big West), Weber State (Big Sky) and Detroit (Midwest Collegiate). Others teams competing for the West Region title include New Mexico, San Diego State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Arizona State, Arizona, UNLV, Oregon, Washington, Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State, Pacific, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Tennessee.

"We have some of the best teams in the nation in our regional," said Owen. "I am excited for our players to have the opportunity to play in this event against some of the nation's best."

Four of the five members of the Navy golf team - senior captain Kirk Glockner (Wilmington, N.C.), junior Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) and sophomores Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) and Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) - made the trek across the country Tuesday afternoon, while freshman Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) came out separately. Hurley stayed behind having to participate in Sea Trials Tuesday - an annual mandatory military training session for all freshmen at the Academy.

Hurley, Craig, Rogers and Glockner enter the national tournament coming off All-Patriot League performances at the conference meet. Hurley shot a three-round 213 to earn a second-place finish, while Craig produced a fourth-place finish for the Midshipmen.

The Mids tee off Thursday at 8:15 a.m. and are paired up with Weber State and Detroit Mercy.
