Mids Tied With Oral Roberts For 25th
Links associated with this release: CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) continued to swing the clubs well Friday afternoon in leading the Mids to a second-round 25th-place tie with Oral Roberts in day two of the 2001 NCAA West Golf Regional at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. Arizona State distanced itself from the leading Friday, shooting an 11-under par and owning an 18-stroke lead over UC-Irvine who is 1-over par. Individually, Arizona State's Matt Jones shot a 7-under par Friday to take the lead at 9-under par, while teammate Jin Park was 4-under par and is in second place with a 7-under par thus far in the tournament. For the Mids, Rogers once again shot a 3-over par 75. The Lothian, Md. native moved up from 74th to 60th with a 6-over par on what head coach Pat Owen has called in extremely challenging course. "This is definitely the most difficult course we've played this year and it's even more challenging that Fresno State's course in which we played on at last year's NCAA Tournament," Owen said. "Nick has played tremendous the last few days and has been consistent in his play." Meanwhile rookie Billy Hurley produced a 6-over par 78 Friday, but is still just 10-over par and in a tie for 97th. Making the big jump for the Mids was senior captain Kirk Glockner (Wilmington, N.C.) who shot a 5-over par 77 and moved into a tied for 120th at 14-over par. While Glockner moved up in the field, teammate Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) had a tough afternoon on the links. The sophomore, who shot a 6-over par after the first day of action, shot an 86 - 14 strokes over par, as he dropped back into a tie with teammate Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) for 135th at 20-over par. "We definitely have the ability to move up and finish strong in the tournament," said Owen. "We are tied with Oral Roberts, Detroit Mercy holds a 2-stroke lead on us and Tennessee is eight strokes ahead. I think we'll have a strong final day tomorrow." The Midshipmen will close out action at the 2001 NCAA West Golf Regional Saturday in their final 18 holes.
