Navy Golf Places 25th At 2001 NCAA West Golf Regional
Links associated with this release: CORVALLIS, Ore. - Navy shot a 26-over par on the final day of action to finish 25th at the 2001 NCAA West Golf Regional at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. The Mids were edged out by Detroit Mercy, who held a one-stroke advantage in the final round and at tournament's end. Arizona State, who built an 18-stroke lead over UC-Irvine in Friday's second round, won the regional as the only squad to finish below par. The Sun Devils led the way with a 12-under par. Meanwhile, Arizona cruised past UC-Irvine in the final round of action as the Wildcats registered a 3-over par to place second. South Carolina's Kyle Thompson made up three strokes in the final round to tie Arizona State's Matt Jones for the individual title, as the pair finished 8-under par. For the Mids, sophomore Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) and rookie Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) posted 5-over par 77's on the final day of action. Rogers remained among the top 80 golfers, finishing tied for 77th with an 11-over par. Hurley, who faced the physical challenge of participating in Sea Trials Tuesday, immediately boarding a plane and flying cross country and taking part in four days of golf, placed 101st with a 15-over par. Captain Kirk Glockner (Wilmington, N.C.) played his final round of collegiate golf, as the senior placed 122 with a 22-over par. Meanwhile, after beginning the tournament on a rough note, junior Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) finished with his strongest round of a 70 and a tie for 131st with a 28-over par. Sophomore Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) rounded out the field of Midshipmen with a 30-over par, finishing 134th. "What a tremendous opportunity and experience this week has been for our guys," said head coach Pat Owen. "I'm really proud of all of them and it was a good way to wrap up the season."
