Navy Fall Classic History / Record Book
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy men’s golf team will play host to the 20th edition of the Navy Fall Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the par-71 Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis with 18 holes set for both days. Teams will tee off between 8:30 and 10:00 am on both days.
The Midshipmen will field three teams — Navy Blue, Gold and White — in the 10-team tournament, and will be joined by Brown, College of Charleston, Delaware, Georgetown, North Dakota State, Saint Joseph’s and Towson.
“We are excited to kick off our fall season with a home event featuring a solid field,” said Pat Owen, who begins his 24th season as Navy’s head coach. “Although we lost two seniors who graduated from last year’s team, we return the bulk of our starting lineup and have several experienced players that we believe have the leadership qualities to lead us back into contention for a Patriot League title. The Navy Fall Classic is a great event as far as determining which players on our team will respond well under pressure, especially as we prepare for our annual Star Match against Army in just a few weeks. I really like our team depth and look forward to seeing how the veteran players and the newcomers mesh this weekend.”
In the 19 years the Navy Fall Classic has been played, only three teams have claimed the tournament title more than once — Navy, George Mason and Delaware, who has won two (2010, ‘11) of the last three crowns. The Mids won the tournament in 1993 and again in ‘95 and ‘96, while the Patriots won the inaugural invitational in 1992 and again in 2005. Both Navy and Delaware are among this year’s field, while several of the other teams playing this weekend have also competed in the annual fall tournament over the years, including Saint Joseph’s who has produced three individual medalists.
Last year, North Dakota State ran away with the team title, producing a 3-under par 565 with St. Bonaventure following in second with a 12-over par 580. The Bison had three of the top four medalists, including Nathan Anderson who topped the field with a 4-under par 138. Navy, meanwhile, placed sixth among the 15-team field with a 20-over par 588.
Junior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) was the Mids’ top finisher in last year’s Navy Fall Classic, tying for 14th with a 4-over par 146. Jonas also paced the team throughout the year, boasting a 76.26 stroke average over the nine events in which he competed which include three top-10 performances.
Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) is among one of the stronger senior classes Navy has had in recent memory. Selby, who finished 24th in last year’s Navy Fall Classic, owned a 76.40 stroke average last year and placed among the top 10 in three of the eight tournaments in which he played. One of those top-10 finishes was at the 2012 Patriot League Championship where he garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League honors for his ninth-place effort.
Team captain David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.), Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) and Bobby Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) round out the senior class. All were among the starting lineup at some point a year ago. Hall, who claimed Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors in 2011, toted a 78.38 stroke average last season, while Keating finished the year with a 79.06 average. House, meanwhile, produced a 77.65 stroke average and put forth his finest effort in what was his most important tournament to date. He was crowned the Patriot League Champion after winning the individual title with a 3-over par 219 for his first collegiate victory. By virtue of taking medalist honors at the Patriot League Championship, House went on to compete at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional where he shot a 3-over par 246 to place 74th.
Sophomores Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) and Zeke Shaffer (Radford, Va.) both saw increased playing time by the spring season with Moyer finishing the year with a 78.62 average and Shaffer posting a 77.92.
Navy, who fields a current roster of 15 players, will put four new faces out on the links this season — sophomore Travis Beach (Dallas, Texas) and freshmen Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.), Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.).
This weekend’s Navy Fall Classic officially kicks off the 2012-13 season which features five events during the fall season. In addition to the four tournaments on the schedule, Army and Navy will converge at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis where they will battle in the annual Star Match on Sept. 28-29.
