Gymnastics Completes Day One of the ECAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Navy gymnastics team took sixth place in the team competition at the ECAC Championships on Friday night in Springfield, Mass. No. 13 Temple took the title with a score of 411.65, followed by No. 12 William & Mary at 410.5 and 15th-ranked UIC at 409.35. Host Springfield College placed fourth with a 407.7 and Army was fifth with a 404.5.
Navy scored a 67.0 on the floor, a 63.55 on the pommel horse, a 67.8 on the rings, a 71.0 on the vault, a 65.3 on the parallel bars and a 65.7 on the horizontal bar.
Army's Kip Weber and William & Mary's Daniel Potemski tied for the all-around title as each scored an 82.85. Navy's Chris Junghans took sixth with a score of 81.550.
The top-eight finishers in each event are scheduled to move on to Saturday's individual finals, however tomorrow's field has not yet been set as there may be scratches.
Mitchell Larios led all Mids on Friday night by scoring not only a career-high but a team-season high in the vault, pacing the field with a score of 15.2. Joshua Steves wasn't far behind as he posted a score of 14.8.
Navy's team total 71.0 on the vault was just 0.45 shy of its season-high score in the event.
For the second consecutive week, Thomas Goodell scored a 14.4 on the rings to lead all Mids in the event. Goodell and Junhans led Navy on the horizontal bar as both scored a 13.85.
Saturday's individual event finals will begin at 6 p.m. at Kresge Gym on the campus of Springfield College.
